MINI IMPLANTS

At Rio Dental in Mexico, we use mini implants to support partials and dentures. You will need to be evaluated to see if you are a candidate for implants. The doctor will perform an oral exam and take a panoramic x-ray to determine if there is enough bone. Sometimes a patient who is not a candidate for traditional implants can get minis. This is because mini implants require less bone and are placed in a different area of the mouth. They are typically placed in the front area of the mouth, both upper and lower jaw.

Mini implants are roughly the size of a toothpick and typically made of titanium alloy. They are called “immediate load” implants because a denture or partial can be attached by the dentist to them on the same day as they are placed. The placement procedure is quick and well tolerated by patients. Traditional implants require a wait of 4-6 months before the abutment and implant crown can be attached.

If the patient requires extractions in the sites where the dentist will need to place the implants, the mini implants cannot be done on the same day. Healing will need to occur before the minis can be placed. Everyone heals at different rates, but generally speaking, minis can be placed 6-9 months after extractions. This is exactly the opposite of traditional implants which are typically placed at the time of an extraction.

Mini implants are made up of the implant, an O-ring and a metal housing. The denture or partial will attach to the unit. Mini implants tend to be more successful in the denser bone of the lower jaw than the less dense bone of the upper jaw.
